The Kyrgyz are superb horsemen, prolific gold miners, and spiritedly independent. They manage in a rough neighborhood (see map) by playing foreign governments against one another. They are also quite fond of revolution.
Characters and Central Conflict
Jenn Taylor - Geologist, representative of Empire Gold, hard-working, and probably out of her depth when she races to Kyrgyzstan to save the Altyn mine. But conflicting advice and unforeseen romance may undermine her loyalty to her employer.
Local Altyn Staff - the revolution and resulting turmoil present an opportunity for the locals to break away from Canadian-owned Empire Gold. Shamanism, deception and violence are all part of the game plan.
Fred Perkins - CEO of Empire Gold, ruthless competitor, willing to break the rules and play the Americans and the Russians against each other.
Russian Embassy - Desperate to retain influence in the former colonies of Central Asia, the Russians view Altyn, and control over major natural resources, as a matter worth fighting for.
Chinese Trade Office - Ousting the Russians from Central Asia would open a corridor for goods and influence into Europe, recreating the Silk Road of the past. But how far will they go to achieve this strategic goal?
Ambassador Flaherty is trying to save his career in an obscure backwater. His wife is ambitious for him, and for herself. Deputy Head of Mission Tom Brock wants to help, but his unorthodox methods arouse suspicion in Jenn Taylor.
